What is RAG?
RAG means the AI looks up your own material before answering, instead of guessing from memory. It’s the technology behind answers with sources.
RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation, and despite the name, the idea is simple: instead of letting the AI answer from its trained memory, you let it first look up a specific set of material, your documents, your staff handbook, your procedures, and then answer based on what it finds.
The difference is like the one between a substitute teacher who guesses and one who first reads the manual. Without lookups, the model answers with the internet average: reasonable, but not yours. With lookups, the answer can say "according to your policy, the wellness allowance is around X euros" and point to where it says so.
RAG is also the honest answer to the question "can the AI learn our material?" It doesn’t learn in the training sense; the material stays with you, and that’s exactly the point: what should be forgotten can be deleted, and what is answered can be traced back to its source.
