What is a token?
AI models read and write in small chunks called tokens, and those are what you pay for. Roughly four characters per token, so longer documents cost more.
A token is the small piece of text an AI model reads and writes. It’s not quite a word and not quite a letter, but something in between. In regular text, one token is about four characters, so a hundred words is roughly 130 tokens.
Why does it matter? Because tokens are what you pay for. AI providers charge per million tokens, both for input and output. A short answer to a short question costs a fraction of a cent, while analysing a long annual report costs more, because the model has to read the whole thing.
That’s also why you can trust an AI service that shows its costs per answer. The price comes from how much text was actually read and written, not some made-up credit currency.
