The context window is the AI’s working memory: the amount of text the model can see at the same time when it writes its answer. Everything counts: your question, the documents you’ve attached, earlier messages in the conversation, and the instructions the service has added.
The window is large but not endless, and anything that doesn’t fit simply isn’t there for the model. That’s why long conversations can feel like the AI is "forgetting" the beginning. It’s not carelessness, there just wasn’t room for the text.
